An Introduction to Zero Waste Workshop

  • Bamboo Turtle, Letchworth 5 The Arcade, Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire SG6 3ET United Kingdom (map)

Are you at the start of your Zero Waste journey?

Do you want to understand the environmental impact of our actions and how to reduce your carbon footprint?

Are you keen to learn new tools for embarking on your less waste journey?

If the answer is yes, then come along and join me for ‘An Introduction to Zero Waste’ at Bamboo Turtle, Letchworth’s very own bulk store, on Sunday 18th August, 2-5pm.

There will be a few short presentations throughout the workshop providing the environmental context for the topics we will be discussing. However for the majority of the session, I will provide you with a series of exercises which we will discuss and brainstorm in groups.

During the first half of the workshop will look at the waste we are currently creating and how this is disposed of, whether through landfill, recycling, reuse and how we might approach this differently.

Understanding the waste we are creating will help us see where to begin tackling what can feel like an overwhelming issue.

  • Pre-course task - I would like to encourage all participants to carry out a bin audit before the session. I will provide you with all the information you need to carry out this task. You do not have to share this information with the group (although people often find it reassuring to know that they are in the same boat as others and facing the same challenges) however it will help you think about areas you are keen to tackle when we are discussing waste disposal and alternatives.

There will be the opportunity to share the results of your waste audit, your successes and your challenges should you wish. However we will also carry out a mini waste audit looking at some of the items we frequently throw away, and discussing their disposal and the alternative options that are available to us.

There will be a short tea break half way through for you to refuel with home made brownies and a cup of tea before we go into the second half of the session where will look at the weekly shop.

Food is a great place to start when embarking on a less waste lifestyle. It is something that comes into our homes on a regular basis and often brings with it a significant amount of single use packaging. We will look at a typical weekly shopping list and consider what alternative options exist, what challenges we might face when building new shopping habits into our lives as well as potential solutions we might put in place to manage some of these challenges. There will be an opportunity for everybody to feed back and for the whole group to share solutions. If you would like a worksheet to take away with you to help you to track any new habits you would like to implement I have prepared a habit tracker which you can take away.

We will finish the sessions by thinking about next steps; how you might move forward on your journey and the types of support that are out there to help and encourage you.

Bamboo Turtle are kindly offering all participants 10% off their bulk shopping on the day of the workshop so remember to bring your reusables along if you’d like to top up your pantry.

Spaces are limited so sign up now to ensure you get a place. I look forward to meeting you.
